New Life Church – Weekly Newsletter – 3/27/20
Grace and Peace, New Life!
It has been a very busy week. I have talked multiple times with most of the pastors in our community, most of our pastors though out the district (as well as our District Superintendent) and have given the General Superintendents a good listening to as well. The spiritual aspect of this has been so encouraging – pastors pastoring pastors through this wilderness time. I strongly believe that on the other side of this crisis, our community and our churches will be unified and stronger than we have ever been. The topic of discussion of all these meetings is quite predictable – COVID-19 concerns. Therefore, I have a number of updates concerning COVID-19’s effect upon our community, our church, our district, and our denomination.
Our Community: The York County Ministerial Alliance has been a powerful asset to this community. The benevolence ministry is in full swing as long as the money holds out. Our local pastors have come together, helping one another with available resources such as video equipment, FM transmitters, technical help, and a host of ideas as to how to proceed together in this crisis. Yorkfest Family Fun Night is still on the schedule for Thursday, September 10th.
Our Church: Sunday services are going to continue to be online only until we get the all-clear from the Center for Disease Control (CDC). In the meantime, worship music and sermons will be posted on our website, https://yorknewlife.org/ and on our Facebook page. We are also looking into adding video to our current service options on the website and a YouTube channel. Facebook live and other live networks have been severely overloaded on Sundays, and thus is not working well or at all for many of our churches. Our weekly evening activities, including our Tuesday women’s group and Wednesday kids and youth activities, are cancelled until we have CDC clearance. We will continue to evaluate this situation closely.
I am working on a few different options to make this coming Easter Sunday special. One option (If I can borrow the short-range FM Transmitter) is to have “Drive In” Easter, in our church parking lot and/or neighborhood. You, as the congregation, would just show up to church in your car with your coffee and donuts, then tune in to the service on your car radio as it is being broadcast from the sanctuary. Then I could have prayer with the families as they leave (under proper CDC social distancing guidelines). Another option being discussed by the Ministerial Alliance pastors is to postpone Easter/Holy Week to a week in late May or early August.
The truth is, I miss you all something fierce. This coming week I will be making phone calls to all the individuals and families for whom I have phone numbers. It is my hope to encourage and pray with you all. I will leave a message if you are unavailable; please feel free to call me back when it’s convenient. I will continue to keep my normal office schedule at the church from 9 a.m. to 12 noon Monday through Friday. Please reach out if you need to be contacted, and we will make sure to respond to your requests. The church office phone is 402-362-5415, and my cell phone is 402-710-8048.
I am checking into linking online giving to our website. In the meantime, you can send your tithe and offering checks to the church at 1028 N. Beaver Avenue, York, NE 68467; or anyone can make a deposit into the New Life Church of the Nazarene Cornerstone Bank account using any of their branches via the drive thru. Those with Cornerstone Bank accounts can also set up a direct deposit or authorize transfers. Please have the teller note your name and any designations (such as tithe, Kind Heart, etc.) on the deposit slip.
Our Nebraska District: Our Nebraska District Superintendent, Rev. Dan Cole, with the guidance of the General Superintendents have made the call to cancel the 2020 District Assembly. All Nebraska District elected officials will automatically be given a 1-year extension to their term. Annual church meetings will not be held and current local church board members are also automatically given a 1-year extension to their terms. The local church boards can nominate new board members to replace any vacancies with the District Advisory Board’s approval. All Nebraska District Assembly business will be carried out via the District Assembly Board. A Special Ordination Service will be held at Lakeside Church of the Nazarene in Hastings NE September 17th at 7:00pm.
Our Denomination: The following is a note to the local churches from the Board of General Superintendents:
These continue to be challenging days as COVID-19 has made its way around the globe. Ministering during a pandemic is new territory for most of us; therefore, we are all relying upon the Lord and the knowledge we have been given to minister in the best way possible.
From every time zone of the world, it was possible to worship with a Church of the Nazarene this past Sunday. The valiant efforts of our pastors and leaders were visible as the good news of Jesus Christ was broadcast in many creative ways. Sunday was a great reminder of Jesus’ words to Peter, “On this rock, I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not overcome it” (Matthew 16:18). We are encouraged when we recognize that this is not our church, but this is Jesus’ church, and we are called to partner with Him in His work.
We encourage you to continue seeking the Lord and His guidance during this time. The ways in which the Holy Spirit has flowed…has resulted in many people outside the walls of our buildings being touched by the Lord. The virus is unable to contain the work of the Holy Spirit flowing through the life of the church.
Today we lift you all in prayer. We rejoice with what God is doing in and through you all in this crisis. At the same time, we mourn with those who are facing loss and grief.
Grace and peace to you,
The Board of General Superintendents
Filimão M. Chambo, Eugénio R. Duarte, David W. Graves, David A. Busic, Gustavo A. Crocker, Carla D. Sunberg
Your Pastor: We are praying for you daily. Please contact me with your specific prayer requests. Continue in your love for God by loving others (1 John 4:11-12) and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ in any way you can (Acts 1:8). Call on your neighbors, church family and family members (Heb 13:2). Share sermons, encourage, pray for and build up one another in love (1 Thessalonians 5:11). We’ll get through this COVID-19 trial, stronger, better than ever, together (James 1:2-4).
We love and miss you all so much,
Pastor Dave and Jamie Martelle
